The STTC is a 104,000 sf trades and technology centre on the RRC Polytech Notre Dame Campus which opened for classes in fall 2018 school year. The building contains major programming areas for Carpentry, Sheet Metal, Refrigeration, Machining/Robotics and Electrical trades, as well as ancillary classrooms, laboratories, student and faculty areas. The Smart Factory is a 6,000 sf addition to the main building to serve robotics, automation and additive manufacturing (completed spring of 2019)

The main mechanical systems are based on a hybrid energy source of well-to-well geothermal heating & cooling, supplemented by central plant steam. The cooling system uses un-tempered well water for cooling when conditions are favourable, eliminating compressor-based refrigeration altogether. The non-workshop spaces are conditioned with a high-efficiency DOAS system coupled with a combination of active chilled beams. The efficient mechanical systems contribute to other sustainable design features resulting in a 34.6% improvement in energy performance compared to the National Energy Code reference building. The project is certified LEED Gold and has been awarded a Green Building Excellence Award by the CaGBC.
